Where is a good Texas engine builder, and how much should I expect to pay for a mild 1600dp? What are the price differences between 1600's, 1776's, and so on. There is a guy on the Samba from Bruceville that sells rebuilt 1600dp's for $695 exchange, is that a good price?

Thanks,
Brad

Doug is going to be at least $895 - $995 for a 1600. I've heard good about them. He stands behind them.
With a 1776 you have more machine work involved plus the extra cost of pistons, jugs & heads.

$695 is a good price if he's using good stuff to build one and will stand behind it with a warranty.
(I would want to know what the line bore was. To know how much life the case had left)

Last time I checked 1600 pistons & jugs were $ 120 for AA brand, $300 for Mahle / Cima
A good set of heads are going to be at least $300
Then you have oil pump, bearings, line bore cost.....

I build my own, don't like not knowing what's in there. Smile
As soon as I get the 1641 I'm working on done I'm looking at building a 1776 this summer, the heads alone are going to be $400
The short block parts alone is going to cost me about $600. Then machine work will be another $200.
But it's not going to be a motor grandma would want. Twisted Evil

Thanks, I will give doug a call when I am ready. I would much rather buy an engine from a builder with happy customers than an unknown. I would like to try to build my own, but I am a lttle wary of these damn motorcycle engines Laughing . What would be the best bang for the buck motor to put in my rail? I see these numbers(1600, 1641, 1776, 2000) thrown around, but don't know how these are different i.e. high rpm hp, low rpm torque. I've been told the best engine would be a stock 2L type IV because it is torquey, reliable and would get good mileage. What do y'all think?

Well for my 2.5 cents, I'd go with a 1600 because of the weight of the rail. But ever since I totaled out a car with a bike I've like having a little more sheet metal around me when I act a fool. badger

Is Doug at Qualitat the guy y'all were referring to? I found his site, and will send him an email if he's the right guy.

Thanks,
Brad

Yes, Doug is the owner. You would get a faster response to calling him I would think. Now he was closed on Mondays last I remember.

I have been pretty busy lately with my new job, but I finally got around to calling Doug today. He was a real nice guy and extremely helpful. He appears to have decent prices as well. I told him that he came highly recommended and that seemed to make him pretty happy. He has a 1915 ready to go right now, but I'm gonna have to wait a bit until the new job is stable before I make any major purchases.
Thanks to Terry and everyone else that pointed me in Doug's direction.
