PostSubject: new carb new problems    Sun 01 Aug 2010, 10:05 pm

I installed a new carb on my 72 super today and also installed new tach and new oil temp gauge i drove the car after i adjusted the carb and found that the car now overheats i changed oils too. im using a full sythetic oil now i was told that the sythetic oil will lower the oil temp. so i changed to 5w30. the car overheated on me once before i found the belt was badly worn and was slipping i have a new belt and its tight so i know its not that. i drove the car maybe 1 mile got gas and drove about 4 to 6 miles and it got up to 220 degrees so i turned around and headed home and before i got home the temp on my gauge said almost 260 and at idle the oil light was on. i idled up and slowly made it home but the temp never dropped. i got to the shop and put a big fan on the engine to cool. after i killed the engine it wouldnt start after setting for 2 or 3 hours when back out and car fired up fine.

The first major question i have is do i have the oil temp sensor in the right hole. i was told by cip1 that the hole facing the ground to the left of the crank pulley is were it should be. im not sure i removed the plug and found a spring back there i put the spring back and installed the sensor i know the engine is overheating because the oil pressure is dropping at idle and the car wont start after i kill it. before i made all the changes it would i could drive 20 miles kill it get right back in fire it up and hit the highway again.

The other thing can anyone give me a good link to carb adjustment for a pict 31. i found one and the car runs good but could the adjustment be making the car overheat.

Also could the oil cooler be clogged with crap if so can i install a remote oil cooler and where do i plumb it from

i know im really green at working on air cooled engines but you guys have been a big help to my dumb ass

Thanks Mike

im gonna go ahead and check the cooler because i "fattened" up the carb and the car ran really bad so i set it back where it was and actually leaned it out more and the car ran longer before overheating so theres got to be crap on the cooler so thanks for the help got alot of work ahead of me

Mike, from reading your posts I can understand your position...

Okay since the engine is out.
How hot did it run with you that you know of,Is there any sign of oil leaking from the flywheel seal?

I seen the post on the distributor issues, where are you at on that also?

How much end play does the motor have? The seal usually starts to leak once you get a motor real hot.

On your carb issue, are you running a header? if so you'll have to run a little more richer.

If the timing is off that will cause it to run hot also.

yeah i talked to a guy and he told me that the timing will cause the engine to over heat so i needed to pull the motor to clean the engine bay and redo the wiring for the tail lights so it needed to be done im also gonna take the engine to the pressure washer and clean the fins out theres not much but it needs cleaning but guys thanks for all the help

ok got everything cleaned up and reistalled engine painted all tins and pressure washed engine and reset timing and test drove the car and it overheated when i got back i changed the oil from 5w30 back to 15w40 and test drove again when i got back after driving 10 miles or so the gauge was saying 220 degrees so i put the fan on it and cooled it off did alittle research and found several people saying that the vdo gauges read higher than autometer or any other gauge so i decided to drive with someone following me and see actually how hot it would get the gauge reached about 230 degrees and plained out i drove almost 20 miles the ambient temp was 96 degrees with the humidity at 1,305,493% so i thought that was pretty good i stopped and pulled the dipstick it was hot but i could touch it before you better not grab it so i think that gauge reads alittle high also i removed the deck lid and the temp never came up over 220 so i got a deck lid stand off kit coming ive been wanting one i also checked the end play on the crank there wasnt much i mean in the thousands of an inch (the administrator asked about that) i found everything else ok the oil in the bellhousing was old i think so i dont think it got it too hot thanks everyone for the help
