I'm going to try to keep a record of the things I am doing to this car. Never done a build thread, don't know if I'll finish this one....

I found a new ride. I really had my heart set on a nice Baja, but it just wasn't in the cards. I call her spot and she has: New tires and wheels, new pan, new 1600dp and a new transaxle. I bought it with every intention of hacking it up and making it into the baja that I always wanted. Well, plans changed... after doing some cleaning on the body and driving it every day for the last couple of weeks, I don't want to cut her up any more. I feel as though we have bonded :Drink Beer:

What it looks like now:

My plans...

Looks like a real good find, I couldn't cut on it either.

Your plan pic looks good.

they sound great until you put in a 1835 with big valve heads, then it gets real loud. I liked mine until then, then added a baffle..lol

So... a little degradation in performance in spot over the last week & half. With school being my priority and finals over the next two weeks, I was sure I may be walking to school soon. Had a little spare time today, so I figured what the heck, I'll see if I can find the trouble.

The problem seemed to be a sinking float (or I thought). The engine would seem to "load up" at low RPM's and I would push in the clutch, rev it up a bit to clear her throat, and push on a bit further. I jerked the carb off, and discovered it was of the Mexican variety. Looked to be pretty new. Did the whole pressure check, no problems. So, I went to cleaning. What a PITA! There is no way to clean the low speed circuitry. I ended up taking everything that would come off... off. Cleaned everything and finally took a welding tip cleaner and bending it just right to run up the orifices. Got it all put back together and discovered Spot still has quite a bit of spunk left in her! It is sooo much more enjoyable when you don't have to jockey between the brake and gas when you pull up to a stop.

Now if the rest of my junk will get here, I can slap the 40's on!

Ok... Haven't posted any updates in a while, so here goes. The black stinger I put on rusted up immediately. Went to the Bug-In @ Ennis (quite a let down, but that is another story) and picked up a chrome stinger. Has a little deeper tone and I have to be VERY careful over steep driveways. I have the flat black and red shot now. And have a set of lowering spindles on order. Still haven't put the 40's on, as it is running so good I don't want to screw it up.

Added serpentine belt system and picked up some new wheels.

And even got a little love at the local show!

I have a beam at the shop getting new ball joints installed and gonna build up a lowered front end to stick under her.

Looks good, the more I see of those serpentine belt systems the more I'm thinking about getting one.

Weld wheels, those are sweet! Adapters or drilled drums?

Looks like some good loving. Nice rack, the one on the bug too.

I'm diggin' the belt system... except that they use a bearing for the idler pulley. The bearing race is exposed to the elements and didn't stay pretty very long. It has water spots all over it now. The gen and crank pulleys are very nice.

The wheels are actually Pacers, They look pretty much like weld, but about $80 each cheaper. I'm going to use wheel adapters for several reasons...
1) I can get a set of 4 for $75.
2) they will space my wheels out enough to clear my lower trailing arm on the new beam.
3) I don't have the nads to try to drill a blank drum.

The racks... Funny thing, my wife brought them over to the car for a photo op. As they were leaving, she stated that even she would do that.... I couldn't talk for the rest of the night. The one on the top of the car I picked it up from a dude from Austin at the Buggy Blast. I've gotten a lot of comments on the way it looks, and I really like it.

Got the wheels and tires on.... Had to raise the rear a click or 2. They rub. Also need to find a narrowed beam before I put my drop spindles on or the fronts will rub as well. Anyone want to trade a fresh stock beam with brand new ball joints (haven't even got it out of the shop yet, they are installing the ball joints this week) for a narrowed beam .I'll even throw in the stock spindles backing plates and brake cylinders.

Now that I'm about done with her... I think I'm gonna start looking for a Baja to trade it off on. Rolling Eyes
