 | Subject: 34PICT-3 Choke Adjustment Question Fri 06 Nov 2009, 8:05 am | |
| OK - a question I am seeking people's opinions on (that should be easy, right?). Background - 1600 CC engine, 34PICT-3 carb, bog standard stock configuration. I have starting issues with my choke, its closing too much when its cold. I want to adjust it to only partially close when cold so the car starts easier (right now runs like %^# until the choke opens up). Right now its set full open when cold, and the car needs a lot of nursing to keep it running until its warm (thanks Mr Muir for that mis-directed advice), so I want to adjust it to be partially closed until it warms/opens up. Somewhere in between where I started and where its at now. I can (and will probably greatly enjoy) playing with it for a week or two until I hit a sweet spot, but does anyone have any suggestions where I should set it to start? Opinions welcome. Thanks...... |

| Hello JD3,
Working from memory (which has failed me in the past I think. I can’t remember.) Be sure the motor is cold & the key has not been turned on. Remove the one wire lead at the choke & check for power when you turn on the key. If you have power, (turn off key) then go on to adjusting the choke. If not fix the power problem.
Loosen the three screws on the electric choke hold down bracket just enough to be able to rotate the electric choke (it has the one wire jack/plug). Look down the carb & rotate the electric choke counter clockwise until the butterfly just completely closes (it should be closed when cold & fully open when warm). Tighten the screws and give it a try. This is usually a good starting point & you can rotate the choke more counter clockwise if you find it needs more warm up time or go the other way if it needs less.
If you find the butterfly is not opening & you have power at the jack, you may need to clean the choke housing to insure good grounding. If that is Ok then you may have a bad electric choke.
I hope this helps.
Be well. |
