| I just bought a 1978 Super and I need to change the oil.
The specifications in the manual don't really address our driving conditions in North Texas, what grade of oil should I use in it?
Also, any recommendations in synthetic blends vs. straight oil?
Your feedback welcomed. Many thanks.... |

| Hello JD3, Welcome to the site.
For my money and 5 cents worth of input, Castrol 20W50.
I haven't used any synthetic oil yet, giving some thought to Castrol's SYNTEC 20W50 for the new bus motor I'm building. |

 | Subject: New Oil Change Related Question Sun 23 Aug 2009, 6:07 pm | |
| I understand I need new gaskets and a filter screen for a Type 1 1.6L oil change. I don't see these on JC Whitney or some of the other online parts places.
I found what looks like a filter screen by STP on the AutoZone site, but it didn't include the gaskets or copper washers I have read also need to be replaced with the service.
Any suggestsions for either a local option (NORTH Dallas, I am in McKinney) or a good online site to buy these?
Thanks..... |

| And that post set off a lot of surfing and thinking.
So the reductions in oil wear reducers in recent decades is lower Zinc and Phosphorus levels which diesel engine oils didn't experience due to the main reason for the reductions being longer life requirements for catalytic converters (phosphorus eats them up almost as bad as lead)?
Seems the big item is Phosphorus being around 1200 ppm (lot of posts on this in the aircooled Porsche sites)
A good compromise for those of us who still think multigrade is intelligent would be Shell Rotella T Multigrade Oil 15W-40 with Triple Protection - a diesel engine oil or for auto engines pre-1980.
Also looking at Chevron Delo 400 LE (15W-40) - same Diesel type oil that has the right level of Phosphorus (.12%) recommended on the Porsche site.

Both of these sold at Walmart for about $12 for 5 qt container.

| Trying the Chevron Delo 400 LE (15W-40) - engine runs OK - oil smells really odd (like alchohol).
