I'm going to try to keep a record of the things I am doing to this car. Never done a build thread, don't know if I'll finish this one....

I found a new ride. I really had my heart set on a nice Baja, but it just wasn't in the cards. I call her spot and she has: New tires and wheels, new pan, new 1600dp and a new transaxle. I bought it with every intention of hacking it up and making it into the baja that I always wanted. Well, plans changed... after doing some cleaning on the body and driving ...

Just finished replacing the running boards and there was some body work to be done due to rust...go figure. I also added 1971 Texas plates. Also discovered why I wasn't getting any hot air through the vents. The hoses were'nt exactly connected. It should work MUCH better now.

Okay, a question. The transmission sounds like it might be low on fluid, but there is no leak. I get about 25 mph and it starts to whine a bit, then stops when I press on the clutch. Any ideas?

We went to put the rear lights together and one minute i have brake lights and tail lights and then no lights ok bad ground, now fixed, but still no brake lights. I'm lost. I also seem to have to connect my front turn signal light wires together to get my rear ones to work, does this seem right?

I got it for more than half the price of a new one. Does anyone know anything about these things? I think it may be worth way more than what I paid for it..... Ive seen some old ones go for $500 on samba..... and then others for 150...... whats the difference?

I think this came up at the last meeting - I had mentioned there was a site that had a roller dolly the person had created to move the body around while he was working on the pan.

Here was the page - the overall restoration story is interesting given how ugly the beginning state was.

Any suggestions on a good place in Collin County (McKinney/Plano/Allen, etc) where they are somewhat "familiar" with inspecting older VW's ?

And, what are the rules for inspection of emissions etc for a 32 year old vehicle?

Well this was a blast to get greasy again, but I do miss a

The task at hand was to get rid of some front end shimmies above 55 mph on my ‘79 convertible beetle.

I ordered new German ball joints and new urethane control arm & sway bar bushings from Top Line Parts in CA

With the car on jack stands (high for some working room),

Hi -

I recently bought one of the Bosch SVDA 034 distributors to replace the 009 I have currently.

I am stuck at simpleton step 3.

Step 1 - Set the crank at TDC

Step 2 - Removed the nut on the distributor bracket and loosened the clamp on the distributor shaft

Step 3 - (here's where progress stops) I cannot pull the distributor out of the block

You can twist the distributor back and forth like it should if you were setting the timong, but it WILL NOT pull out of the block.

Guys, used the search mode and only found topics on heater boxes. I have looked up on the web for an aftermarket heater the evidently mounts in the engine compartment. This has a blower with three speeds, as well as mounting hardware. All for $129.00. Does it work? Is it easy to install? Is it a good product or are the better products out there? I saw another forum that listed one for placing under the rear seat. Thanks for all replies.
